The chiller is a refrigeration unit used for cooling and heating liquid heat transfer fluids in the central air-conditioning system, which can be air supply units or fan coil units. A wide range of power makes it possible to use chillers in premises of various sizes: from apartments and private houses to offices and hypermarkets. In addition, they are used in the food industry for cooling water and beverages, in the sports and recreation sphere - for cooling ice rinks and ice areas, in pharmaceuticals - for cooling medicines.
The industrial chiller is an aggregate designed to cool a liquid that is used as a coolant for air conditioning systems. To date, the most common type of such units are vapor compression refrigeration machines. The circuit of such an industrial chiller always includes such basic elements as a compressor, an evaporator, a condenser and an expansion device.
The principle of operation of such a system is based on the absorption and release of thermal energy due to a change in the aggregate state of the coolant, depending on the pressure exerted on it. The most important element on which the industrial chiller's operation primarily depends is the compressor, which today exists in several types:
- rotary
- spiral
- screw
- piston
- centrifugal
The main task of the compressor is to compress the refrigerant vapor, thereby increasing the pressure, which is necessary to initiate condensation. Further, the hot vapor-liquid mixture enters the condenser (most often air cooling), which transfers heat energy to the external environment. After the refrigerant is completely liquid, it enters the expansion device (choke), which is located in front of the evaporator and lowers the pressure to such an extent that it begins to boil. Passing through the evaporator, the boiling refrigerant completely passes into a gaseous state and absorbs heat energy from the coolant, thereby reducing its temperature.
The above scheme of operation of the industrial chiller does not change depending on their designs, which there are several options:
- monoblock outdoor installation;
- Monobloc with centrifugal fans;
- with remote condenser;
- With a condenser, cooled by a liquid.
- Scheme of operation of air-cooled industrial chiller
Whatever implementation you choose, the principle of the industrial chiller always remains unchanged. The fundamental moment in designing this type of equipment is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for installation, which clearly indicates the required coolant flow rate, the permissible ambient temperature and the amount of heat that must be diverted.
Types of circuits for liquid cooling units (industrial chillers)
- Scheme of direct cooling of a liquid.
- Scheme of cooling the liquid using an intermediate coolant and a secondary heat exchanger.
- Scheme of liquid cooling using a storage tank
- Scheme of cooling the liquid using an intermediate coolant and an open secondary heat exchanger.

In order to choose the right industrial chiller, you should always contact the specialists who are well aware of what kind of constructive scheme to offer for each specific case, because despite the general principle of operation, each element of the installation plays a very important role in the functionality of the system as a whole.
